This is a program created for the enrichment and enjoyment of the high school literary experience. Hiram Sims recognized a rather disturbing pattern in countless American English classrooms – all of the writers that were a part of the standard curriculum were dead.  The absence of the living writer in the classroom often made the reading of poetry and fiction in the public school system very boring. So, LWS was created to fill this void and to bring living Los Angeles poets and storytellers into the classroom. Once a month, Los Angeles writers who have published books visit LAUSD classrooms, and perform their works for students. The readings are traditionally followed by book signings, where interested students are given a free copy of the author’s work.
