If You’re Going to Live on Mars is this southern Black man’s journey through the United States. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana during the Jim Crow South, I saw and experienced the violence of laws, cultural practice, and physical assault. That violence is the harvest of the racial hatred this country has cultivated since its founding in 1619. These poems, stories, essays, and commentary examine the macro and micro impact of racism upon individuals, families, communities, and this country. It also critiques the impact racism has in our lives internally. The way we see ourselves and others is a direct result of societal pressure imposed by a racist America. “If you’re going to live on Mars, life must be sustainable, in an environment that never considered your existence.”
